During her recent UK tour, Séverine Ballon performed at the University of Leeds and kindly gave a series of workshops for composition and performance students. Many thanks to Séverine for her time and excellent guidance. Further thanks to Martin Iddon for organising the event.

My work, through vergence, explores how the in-between might not be merely a necessary passage between two stable states, but how it can be a productive site in its own right. The cellist’s hands are treated independently, always transitioning without direction, in a state of instability — they intentionally interfere with each other. Resultant sounds, moments of seeming stability, fall out of this transitory swirl of thresholds and briefly give a sense of direction before falling back into the in-between.

ephemeral; falling in and out of itself; always transitioning; directionless; existing on thresholds
