Ahead of his performance at the University of Leeds’ International Concert Series, Ian Pace kindly workshopped compositions of postgraduate students. His guidance was excellent and provided much food for thought — many thanks to him.

Indicated by the title, my work concerns metaxy. This stems from Eric Voegelin’s ‘paradox of consciousness’ in which he argues that there are two structures of consciousness present in every human experience: intentionality and luminosity. Intentionality concerns ‘Thing-reality’ in which the ‘mind perceives body [and] subject confronts object’ in order to apprehend the ‘real’. Conversely, luminosity relates to the ‘It-reality’, in which reality elucidates consciousness. Consciousness can therefore be described as metaxy, a constant in-between of the structures of consciousness.

This peculiar middle ground is where my work seeks to inhabit. The notation requires the performer to be constantly readjusting their focus, zooming in on details whilst losing a grasp of the whole. The work deliberate never settles in one area and is constantly interfering with itself — the ‘betweenness’ of interpretation and performance becomes productive in the tense character of the work.

These sketches will most definitely be developed. The stability of the parameters between which the work resides will be examined.
