Between Focus (2019) is a guided improvisation for pianist and dancer. The work explores how the piano might be interpreted as an ‘object-in-itself’ or a component of the space: performers’ attention is constantly shifting between these specific and holistic forms, but never settles on either. The relationship between the performers is similarly in a state of constant transition between aiding explorations of the piano, actively interfering, and becoming momentarily passive in the process. The ‘betweenness’ of understandings is the productive site of the work—instability is the ‘master state’ from which stability might arise, but is always quickly swept away.

Performed by and composed in collaboration with Marianna Minasowa and Gabriel Jones.

Recorded live at Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds.
